How these comparisons are written
Every one of these starts with the mechanism, because once you know why a thing is lighter you can tell whether the saving applies to you. A quilt is lighter than a sleeping bag because the down underneath you is compressed flat and does no work, so deleting it plus the hood plus the zip saves real weight and costs you draft control. A trekking pole shelter is lighter than a freestanding tent because the poles are already in your hands and the tent poles simply stop existing, which is worth nothing at all if you do not hike with poles. The number follows from the mechanism, and the mechanism tells you when the number is a lie.
Each page then says plainly who should choose the heavier answer. That is the part most comparisons skip, and it is the part that makes the rest credible. A restless sleeper is better off in a bag. A hiker who camps on wooden tent platforms and rock slabs is better off with a freestanding tent. Someone doing a week of sustained Pacific Northwest rain is better off in synthetic insulation than in down. None of those people are doing it wrong.

We do not test gear in person and will not pretend to. Where two brands are measuring different things and calling them the same thing, the page says so. Three of these comparisons touch things that can hurt you, so they carry warnings rather than only recommendations. Sleeping bag and quilt temperature ratings are survival ratings, not comfort ratings, and the comfort figure usually sits 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the published limit. A warm quilt over a cold pad does not work, because the ground pulls heat out of you far faster than the air does. Hollow fibre water filters remove bacteria and protozoa but not viruses, and a single freeze cracks the fibres with no visible sign at all.
Going ultralight must not mean going unprepared. On every one of these eight decisions the lighter option is a legitimate choice and the heavier option is a legitimate choice, and on none of them is "carry nothing" a choice. Shelter adequate to the real conditions, insulation, rain protection, navigation, water treatment and a way to call for help are fixed costs. You are responsible for what you walk into. One row in that table has no other side, and it is deliberate. Water treatment is not a choice between a filter and chemicals, it is a choice between one method and two. Hollow fibre filters are destroyed by a single freeze with no visible sign, they remove bacteria and protozoa but not viruses, and they clog in silty water. Chlorine dioxide weighs almost nothing and covers every one of those failure modes, which is why every complete kit on this site carries a backup and why the comparison page reaches the same conclusion at more length.
The pack row is the other one worth reading twice, because it is the most expensive mistake in this hobby and the arithmetic is not obvious. A pack has a design load, and total means base weight plus food, water and fuel rather than base weight alone. A 14 lb base weight plus five days of food at 1.5 lb per day plus two litres of water is already 25 lb 5 oz, which is the top of the frameless range before anything has gone wrong. Buy the pack after the load is final, never before, and use the pack weight calculator to check the loaded figure rather than the base weight.
Weight is never the only axis
Every table on this site sorts by weight because weight is the number this hobby measures, and every page then spends its length on the things weight does not capture. Durability, repairability, fit, how a piece of gear behaves when it is wet, and how narrow the band of conditions is where it works are all invisible in an ounce column, and any one of them can outweigh the whole calculation.
The pattern repeats across categories. The lightest option is usually the one with the narrowest window: a frameless pack has a load ceiling, a 30 degree quilt has a temperature floor, a silnylon shelter sags when wet, and an alcohol stove is useless in wind and banned under many fire restrictions. None of that makes the light option wrong. It makes the light option a choice with conditions attached, and the point of these pages is to state the conditions rather than to hide them behind a specification.
