What is the actual formula for food weight?

Food weight in ounces equals daily calories divided by calorie density in calories per ounce, multiplied by the number of days. That is the entire calculation, and it is worth doing by hand once because it makes the trade obvious. At 3,000 calories a day, food at 100 calories per ounce weighs 30 oz per day. The same 3,000 calories at 125 calories per ounce weighs 24 oz. Over a seven day carry that difference is 2 lb 10 oz, which is more than most people save by replacing a tent.

Density is set by fat content, because fat carries 9 calories per gram against 4 for carbohydrate and protein, and by how much water is left in the food. Anything you can pour water out of is dead weight on your back. That is the whole reason dehydrated and freeze dried food exists, and it is why a can of chili is not a backpacking meal.

What calorie density can you realistically hit?

100 to 125 calories per ounce is the ultralight target band. Below 100 you are paying to carry water and fibre. Above 125 the arithmetic still works and the eating usually does not: hitting it means most of your day is oil, nut butter, chocolate and chips, and appetite tends to collapse within a few days. A realistic mixed resupply that a person can actually finish sits near 110.

Where does the 1.5 pounds per day rule come from?

It is the result of the two anchors meeting. 24 ounces at 110 calories per ounce is about 2,640 calories, which is roughly what a moderate day of hiking costs a mid-sized adult, and 24 ounces is 1.5 lb. In winter the figure rises to about 2 lb per day, partly because you burn more keeping warm and partly because cold weather food tends to be less dense.

Treat it as a sanity check rather than a prescription. If your plan comes out well under 1.5 lb per day, either your food is unusually dense or you are planning to underfeed yourself, and only one of those is fine. If it comes out well over 2 lb per day, the problem is almost always density rather than quantity, and the fix is in the shopping rather than the portioning. Why does food get lighter as the trip gets longer?

It does not, but your pack does, and it is the fastest weight loss available to you. Food is the only major component that disappears on schedule. A seven day carry starts 10.5 lb heavier than it finishes, which means the pack you fit at the trailhead is not the pack you walk in for most of the week.

This has a practical consequence for gear choice. Frameless and lightly framed packs carry well up to about 25 to 30 lb of total load, so a hiker whose base weight is 9 lb can start a five day carry at roughly 9 lb of base, 7.5 lb of food and 4.4 lb of water for a 20.9 lb pack, which such a pack handles comfortably. Add two more days of food and the same setup goes over the line. Plan resupplies around what your pack carries well, not just around what fits.

What does this calculator leave out?

Water, fuel and the container. Water is the other consumable and it is heavier than food per unit of usefulness at 2.2 lb per litre, which the water carry calculator works through. Fuel runs roughly 0.5 oz of isobutane per two cup boil, and a 110 g canister holds about 3.9 oz of fuel, so a week of one hot meal a day is close to a single small canister.

The container matters too. A food bag is a couple of ounces, and a bear canister is 2 to 3 lb of base weight that is legally required in a growing list of places. Check the managing agency before you plan around a hang, and size the canister to the carry rather than the trip.
