What is calorie density and why does it decide your pack weight?

Calorie density is the number of food calories contained in one ounce of a food by weight. It is not a nutrition claim and it is not about how healthy something is. It is a shipping problem: you are moving energy up a mountain on your back, and calorie density is the exchange rate between ounces carried and energy delivered.

The arithmetic is short. Divide your daily calorie target by your food bag average in calories per ounce and you get ounces per day. Divide that by 16 and you get pounds per day. Multiply by days to resupply and you have the number that goes on your gear list. A hiker at 3,000 calories per day carrying food that averages 100 calories per ounce carries 30 oz a day. The same hiker at 125 calories per ounce carries 24 oz. Over a seven day carry that difference is 2 lb 10 oz, which is heavier than most ultralight shelters.

There is a physical reason the range tops out where it does. Fat delivers 9 calories per gram while carbohydrate and protein deliver about 4 each, and water delivers none at all. Every food above roughly 150 calories per ounce is high fat, and every food below roughly 60 calories per ounce is mostly water. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains every row in the table below without needing to memorise a single figure.

Notice what the table does not say. It does not say to eat only the top rows. It says that the average of everything in the bag needs to land in the target band, and that the top rows are the lever you pull to get it there when the bottom rows are things you actually want to eat. How much does food weigh per day at each calorie level?

Daily calorie needs on trail vary far more than people expect. A short weekend at moderate mileage might run 2,500 calories a day. A thru-hiker two months in, covering 25 miles daily with elevation, can genuinely burn past 4,500. The table below runs both ends against the three density figures that matter: 100 as the floor of the target band, 110 as the realistic mixed resupply average, and 125 as the top of the band.

Two things fall out of that table. First, the gap between the 100 row and the 125 row inside any calorie level is roughly 20 percent of the food weight, which on a seven day carry at 3,500 calories is over 3 lb. Second, and less obviously, moving from 3,000 to 4,500 calories a day costs you far more than any density improvement can save. The rules of thumb most hikers actually plan with are 1.5 lb per day for three season conditions and 2 lb per day for winter or very high output days. That last note matters more than it looks. Base weight is everything in or on the pack except food, water and fuel, which is exactly why a 9 lb base weight can still walk out of town at 27 lb. A ten day winter carry at 2 lb per day is 20 lb of food alone, more than double a full ultralight base weight, and it will destroy the carry of any frameless pack. Frameless packs carry well to about 25 lb total and badly above 30 lb, so long carries and minimal packs are in direct tension. Why is 110 calories per ounce the realistic number?

Because a food bag is not a spreadsheet, it is ten days of meals a human has to want to eat. Push the average to 125 and you are looking at a bag dominated by nuts, oil, nut butter, chocolate and cheese. That works for three days. By day six most people are avoiding the food bag entirely, and a hiker who is not eating is a hiker whose pace, decision making and cold tolerance all quietly degrade.

Substantially, and planning a long trip from your day one appetite is one of the most common errors in resupply planning. In the first three or four days most people eat noticeably less than they expect, because the body has not adapted to the workload and because appetite lags behind expenditure. Boxes packed at full ration for that period routinely come back with food in them.

Somewhere in the second or third week the opposite happens. Long distance hikers describe an appetite that becomes difficult to satisfy at all, where the food bag empties faster than planned and town stops turn into serious eating. At that point a 2,500 calorie day is not enough and the daily carry has to move up, which is why long trail food plans are usually written as light in the early sections and heavier later rather than one flat figure repeated.

Practically, that means two adjustments. Plan the first resupply light and the later ones fuller, and keep the density high enough that scaling the calories up does not scale the weight up unmanageably. A hiker whose bag averages 110 calories per ounce can add 1,000 calories a day for 9.1 oz. Composition matters too, not only density.
