Base weight is everything in or on your pack except food, water and fuel. It is the number backpackers use to compare kits, because it is the only part of the load that stays the same whether you are out for one night or ten. Four tiers have settled into common use: super ultralight under 5 lb, ultralight under 10 lb, lightweight under 20 lb, and traditional at 20 lb and above. This page gives each tier in four units, shows what gear choices put you in each one, and converts every tier into the loaded weight you will actually pick up at the trailhead.

Start with that scale, because none of the numbers below mean anything until you have weighed your own kit. Published manufacturer weights are optimistic often enough to matter, stuff sacks and stakes and repair kits are usually quoted without the bag they come in, and a spreadsheet built on catalogue figures typically runs one to two pounds lighter than the pack on the scale. A digital pocket scale costs less than a single freeze dried meal and it is the only thing on this site that improves the accuracy of every other number.

What exactly does base weight exclude?

Three things, and only three: food, water and fuel. Everything else counts. The pack counts. The shelter, stakes and guylines count. The quilt, pad and pillow count. The stove, pot and spork count. The rain jacket counts if it lives in the pack rather than on your body, and the puffy counts either way because you are not wearing it while walking. The phone counts, the power bank counts, the toilet trowel counts, the first aid kit counts, and the little nylon bag you keep it all in counts.

Consumables are excluded because they change. Food goes from 10.5 lb to nothing across a seven day carry. Water swings between empty and six pounds within a single afternoon. Fuel burns off at a few grams a night. Including them would make base weight meaningless as a comparison, since two hikers with identical gear would post different numbers depending on how far they were from the next spring. Excluding them gives you a single stable figure that describes the kit rather than the itinerary.

What people argue about is worn weight. Shoes, socks, shorts, shirt, hat, sun hoody and trekking poles are worn or carried in your hands rather than in the pack, and the common convention is to leave them out of base weight and track them separately as worn weight. That convention is fine as long as you apply it honestly. Wearing your rain jacket to the car and calling it worn weight, then packing it five minutes later, is the sort of accounting that produces gear lists nobody can reproduce. If it spends the day in the pack, put it in base weight.

The boundaries are conventions, not physics. Nothing changes about your body at 9.9 lb that does not change at 10.1 lb. What the tiers give you is a shared vocabulary and a set of realistic expectations. When somebody says they run a sub-10 kit, an experienced hiker immediately knows they are probably sleeping under a trekking pole shelter with a quilt rather than a bag, because that is the only combination that reliably fits inside 10 lb without cutting safety margin.

The tiers are also not a ladder everyone should climb. Most hikers are best served landing in the lightweight band and stopping there. The move from traditional to lightweight buys back around 10 lb for a moderate amount of money and no loss of comfort at all. The move from lightweight to ultralight buys another 5 to 7 lb but costs far more per pound and starts asking you to accept smaller shelters, thinner fabrics and less margin. The move from ultralight to super ultralight is mostly a subtraction exercise, and every subtraction below 8 lb removes something that had a purpose.

Where does the weight actually sit in each tier?

In three items, mostly. Shelter, sleep system and pack are the Big Three, and they run near 55 percent of base weight at every tier. That ratio is the single most useful fact on this page, because it tells you where to look first and it tells you that the ratio never improves. If your Big Three are heavy, your kit is heavy, no matter how carefully you count the rest.

Read the columns downward and the strategy writes itself. Moving the Big Three alone from the traditional column to the ultralight column removes 11 lb 1 oz, which is more than an entire ultralight base weight. No amount of work on the right-hand side of a gear list competes with that. Cutting your toothbrush in half saves about 6 grams. Swapping a 5 lb tent for a 1 lb 4 oz trekking pole shelter saves 1,701 grams, which is 283 toothbrushes.

The order matters as much as the total. Shelter first, because it holds the largest single saving. Sleep system second, because the pad and the quilt trade against each other and have to be chosen as a pair. Pack last, always, because a pack is a load-carrying structure with a design load, and you cannot choose the structure before you know the load. Buy a 1 lb 5 oz frameless pack while your base weight is still 20 lb and you will be less comfortable than you were with the 5 lb pack, having spent $400 to get there.

What does each tier weigh once you add food and water?

Base weight is a comparison number. Loaded weight is what your body experiences. The table below converts every tier into a real trailhead weight using three season consumption rates: 1.5 lb of food per person per day and 2 litres of water on your back, which is 4.4 lb at the standard 2.2046 lb per litre. Two things jump out of that grid. The first is that consumables dominate the long trips. Seven days of food and two litres of water is 14.9 lb, which is more than an entire lightweight base weight. On a long carry you are mostly carrying groceries, which is why calorie density matters and why resupply strategy beats gear shopping on a thru-hike.

The second is where the 30 lb line falls. A frameless pack carries well to roughly 25 lb total and badly above 30 lb. Read across the 15 lb base weight row and you cross 25 lb somewhere around day four and touch 30 lb at seven days. Read across the 20 lb row and you are over 25 lb before you have left the car park. Water is the volatile term. Two litres is a reasonable default for a well-watered mountain trail. A dry stretch in the desert can mean six litres, which is 13.2 lb and turns a comfortable 10 lb ultralight kit into a 30 lb carry with no gear change at all. Why does the pack itself count toward base weight?

Because it is gear, and because leaving it out breaks every comparison. A pack is two to five pounds depending on the tier, which is a fifth to a third of a lightweight base weight. A gear list that quietly excludes it reads two to five pounds lighter than an identical list that includes it, and the reader has no way to tell which convention was used unless it is stated.

There is a second, better reason. Counting the pack forces you to confront the compounding effect that makes ultralight work at all. Every pound you remove from the contents is a pound the pack does not have to carry, which means less frame, less fabric, less suspension and therefore a lighter pack. Cut the shelter by three and a half pounds and you have not just saved three and a half pounds, you have made a 2 lb pack viable where a 4 lb pack was needed. Run it the other way and nothing compounds: buy the light pack first and you are simply overloading it.

Volume compounds the same way. A quilt packs smaller than a bag of the same warmth, a Dyneema shelter packs smaller than a double wall tent, and a smaller total volume lets you drop from a 65 L pack to a 50 L one. Which tier should you actually aim for?

Aim one tier better than where you are, and no further. A hiker at 30 lb should be trying to get under 20, not chasing a sub-10 kit they will not enjoy and cannot afford. The first tier jump is also the cheapest one: much of it comes from removing gear you never used, replacing a 5 lb pack with a 2 lb 3 oz one, and swapping a bulky synthetic bag for down. Run a shakedown before you buy anything, because the items you did not touch on the last three trips weigh the same as the items you did.

Under 20 lb, most people find that the trip changes character. Twenty mile days become plausible, steep descents stop hurting your knees so much, and you stop looking for a place to sit down every hour. Under 10 lb, the returns get thinner and the constraints get sharper: smaller shelter, less clothing margin, more attention to the forecast. Under 5 lb, you are making genuine trade-offs against comfort and against weather margin, and that tier belongs to experienced hikers in known conditions rather than to anyone planning a first shoulder season trip.

Body size matters here and is usually ignored. The tiers are absolute numbers, but the load your body carries is relative. A 200 lb hiker carrying 30 lb is at 15 percent of body weight. A 120 lb hiker carrying the same 30 lb is at 25 percent, which is well past the commonly cited guidance. Taller hikers also need longer pads, longer quilts and larger shelters, all of which weigh more, so a 12 lb base weight at six foot four is a better result than a 10 lb base weight at five foot four.

Going ultralight must not mean going unprepared. Every number on this page assumes a kit that still carries adequate shelter, adequate insulation for the coldest night you could realistically meet, rain protection, navigation, water treatment and a way to call for help. Those six things are fixed costs, not places to save grams. Hypothermia does not require winter: wet clothing, wind and a hiker who has stopped moving will do it at 45 degrees Fahrenheit. How do you find out which tier you are actually in?

Weigh everything, once, item by item, and write it down. Not the pack on a bathroom scale, which is too coarse and hides where the weight lives. Item by item, on a scale that reads to a tenth of an ounce or a gram, including the stuff sacks. Most people find between one and three pounds they did not know they were carrying, and roughly half of that comes from items they cannot justify once they see the number next to them.

One habit is worth more than any purchase: reweigh after every trip and note what you did not use. Gear lists rot. Items get added for one trip and never removed, spare batteries accumulate, the first aid kit grows. A kit that was 12 lb two seasons ago is usually 14 lb now, and nobody notices until they weigh it again. Do the Big Three really make up half of base weight?

Close to it, at every tier. The ratio does not improve as you get lighter, so there is never a point where the small items become the main problem.

Is a lower base weight always safer?

No. Lower base weight reduces injury risk, fatigue and joint load, and it is genuinely safer on long days. It becomes unsafe the moment it is achieved by dropping insulation, rain protection, navigation, water treatment or a way to call for help. Those are fixed costs. A 7 lb base weight built by leaving the rain jacket at home is a worse kit than a 14 lb one that carries it.
