Layering is a system for managing one variable: how much heat you are producing compared with how fast you are losing it. Why should you start out slightly cold?
Because within roughly ten minutes of walking uphill you will be producing far more heat than you were standing at the car, and anything you kept on for those ten minutes is now wet. That sweat does not disappear. It sits in your insulation, stops it working, and then evaporates off you later, usually at the exact moment you stop to eat and start cooling down.
So the rule is simple: dress to be slightly cold when you start walking. If you are comfortable at the trailhead you are overdressed. How dangerous is hypothermia, really?
The practical defences are all cheap. Keep one set of sleep clothing genuinely dry and never hike in it, so there is always a dry layer in reserve. Put the puffy on at the first stop rather than when you feel cold. Eat, because digestion is heat and an under-fuelled hiker cools much faster. Watch your partners for stumbling, fumbling hands and quiet confusion, which show up before anyone thinks to say they are cold. And if things go wrong, the response is shelter, dry insulation and calories, in that order, not walking it off.
How does layering interact with the sleep system?
