How to Pack a Backpack: Load Order That Works

How you pack changes how a load feels more than a pound of gear does. A stable 25 lb pack feels lighter than an unstable 20 lb one, because an unstable load makes small corrections all day that you pay for in your lower back and your ankles. Load order is free weight savings, and it is the one improvement that works with the gear you already own.
Why does load order matter more than pack weight?
A loaded pack is a mass held some distance from your spine, and that distance is a lever. Move a 2 lb object from against your back to the outside of the pack and you have not added any weight, but you have added torque that your back muscles cancel with every step. Over 15 miles that is thousands of small corrections.
Height matters for the same reason. Weight carried high sits closer to your natural centre of gravity when you are upright, so it presses down through your hips instead of pulling you backwards. Weight carried low and out sits behind you and makes you lean forward to compensate, which is the posture that makes people describe a pack as heavy when the number on the scale says otherwise.
There is one exception. On steep scrambling, technical trail or anything where balance beats efficiency, drop the heavy items slightly lower. A lower load is harder work on flat ground and more stable when you are moving over rock.

The food and water row carries most of the weight and is worth thinking about separately. What actually keeps your gear dry?
A pack liner, meaning a single waterproof bag inside the pack that everything critical lives in. Not a rain cover. Rain covers leak where the shoulder straps pass through, blow loose in wind, and do nothing about the water that runs off your head, down your back and straight into the top of the pack. In sustained rain they mostly slow the problem down.

Line the main compartment with it, put the quilt and sleep clothes in first, roll the top over and clip it. The pack fabric can then be soaked without anything inside it getting wet, and a wet pack is fine. A wet quilt is a genuine emergency, because down loses most of its insulating value when it is saturated.

The hipbelt pockets exist so that you do not have to stop. Snacks for the next two hours, lip balm, your phone if you navigate with it, and somewhere to put a wrapper. That is the list. This matters more than it sounds, because hikers who have to remove a pack to eat simply eat less, and under-eating is a much bigger performance problem than a few ounces of gear.
The lid or top pocket is break kit: headlamp, map, permit, sunscreen, repair kit, anything small that gets lost in the main bag. Keep both light. Weight in a hipbelt pocket swings with every stride and weight in the lid sits at the far end of the lever from your hips.
Rain gear is the one item people put in the wrong place most often. It belongs at the very top of the main compartment, not the bottom, because the moment you need it is the moment you do not want to unpack the entire pack in the rain to reach it.
