Sawyer Squeeze vs Katadyn BeFree: Flow Rate or Lifespan?

Updated 2026-08-21 Researched, not tested in person
Quick answer

The BeFree flows faster when new and is the nicer filter to drink from. The Sawyer Squeeze is slower but has a much longer rated life and can be forced clean with a syringe, which is why it is the one most long distance hikers end up carrying. Neither removes viruses, chemicals or heavy metals, so both are treatments for protozoa and bacteria and nothing else.

Choose the Sawyer Squeeze water filtration system if…

Carry the Squeeze for long trips and dirty water. The syringe backflush genuinely restores flow rather than partly clearing it, so a filter that has slowed on silty water can be brought back at camp. It also threads onto standard bottles, which makes it easy to build a gravity setup. It is slower than the BeFree from new and that difference is real, but the gap closes as both filters accumulate use.

Choose the Katadyn BeFree 1 L collapsible filter bottle if…

Carry the BeFree for shorter trips and clean sources. Drinking from it is faster and more pleasant, filling is quick from a shallow stream, and the soft flask packs down to nothing. The compromise is that a BeFree that clogs cannot be truly backflushed, only swished, so on silty water it slows down and stays slow. Carry a spare cartridge if the trip is long and the water is not clear.

Frequently asked questions

Does either filter remove viruses?

No. Both are 0.1 micron hollow fibre filters, which stops protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium and bacteria such as E coli, but viruses are far smaller and pass straight through. In most of North America and Europe that is an accepted risk for backcountry surface water. Where sanitation is poor or the water may be contaminated by human waste, you need a virus capable purifier or a chemical treatment as well.

What happens if the filter freezes?

Ice expands inside the hollow fibres and splits them, and the filter then passes water without filtering it. The damage is invisible, so you cannot inspect for it. Sleep with the filter in your quilt on any night below freezing, and if you think it has frozen, treat it as failed rather than hoping. This is the single most common way a working filter quietly stops working.

Do filters remove chemicals or heavy metals?

No, and this matters more than people expect. Agricultural runoff, mine drainage, road salt and blue green algae toxins all pass through a hollow fibre filter. No filter in this class addresses them. The answer is source selection: read the land management notices for the area, and do not draw water below a mine, a feedlot or a bloom, however clear it looks.

Can you use either as a gravity system?

The Squeeze more readily, because it threads onto standard bottle and bag necks and there are widely used bag setups built around it. A gravity setup is worth having for group trips and dry camps, since it filters several litres while you do something else. The BeFree can be rigged similarly with the right bag but has fewer well proven options.

How we choose: we compare published manufacturer specifications, listed weights, and verified owner reviews across retailers. We do not test gear in person, and every weight quoted here is the manufacturer's figure unless we say otherwise, so weigh your own kit before you trust a total. Going lighter also means carrying less margin, so treat insulation, navigation, water treatment and an emergency plan as fixed costs rather than places to save grams.
