Updated 2026-09-26 Researched, not tested in person
Quick answer

Pick the Platypus QuickDraw for long trips and dirty water, and the Katadyn BeFree for drinking straight from the flask on short trips. The QuickDraw flows up to 3 litres a minute, threads onto Smartwater bottles and can be backflushed. The BeFree flows up to 2 litres a minute, packs smaller and is cleaned by swishing. Both are rated for about 1,000 litres, and neither removes viruses.

Choose the Platypus QuickDraw 1 L filter system if…

Choose the QuickDraw if you want one filter that does several jobs. It threads onto the Smartwater bottles most thru hikers already carry, filters into a second bottle through its ConnectCap, and hangs as a gravity filter in camp. Being able to force clean water back through it is the practical difference over a long trip, because silt loaded fibres are what slow every hollow fibre filter down. Our Platypus QuickDraw review covers it in full.

Choose the Katadyn BeFree 1 L collapsible filter bottle if…

Choose the BeFree if you mostly drink straight from the flask on day hikes and short trips with clear water. It drinks well, rolls up small when empty, and needs no second bottle. The trade is that you can only clean it by swishing, the flask is less durable than a hard bottle, and flow drops noticeably once the fibres load up.

Frequently asked questions

Which filters faster, the QuickDraw or the BeFree?

On paper the QuickDraw. Platypus publishes up to 3 litres per minute when squeezed and 1.75 litres per minute as a gravity filter. Katadyn publishes up to 2 litres per minute for the BeFree. Both slow down as the fibres load with silt, and how well you clean them matters more after the first few weeks than the number on the box.

How long do the filters last?

Both are rated for about 1,000 litres depending on water quality. The BeFree AC version linked here adds an activated carbon stage for taste that Katadyn rates for about 200 litres, after which the hollow fibre still filters but the taste benefit is gone.

Do either of them remove viruses?

No. Both are hollow fibre microfilters for bacteria and protozoa. Platypus states its filter is tested to remove 99.9999 percent of bacteria and 99.9 percent of protozoa and does not remove viruses. Where viruses are a concern, add a chemical treatment or UV, as the CDC recommends for backcountry water.

Can you use the QuickDraw on a Smartwater bottle?

Yes. The QuickDraw threads onto standard 28 mm bottles such as Smartwater and Platypus narrow mouth bottles on the dirty side, and its ConnectCap lets you filter into another 28 mm bottle. The BeFree filter is designed around its own soft flask and a wide 42 mm thread.

What happens if the filter freezes?

Both are ruined if water freezes inside the fibres, and you cannot see the damage. On cold nights sleep with the filter in a bag inside your quilt, and replace one you suspect has frozen.

How we choose: we compare published manufacturer specifications, listed weights, and verified owner reviews across retailers. We do not test gear in person, and every weight quoted here is the manufacturer's figure unless we say otherwise, so weigh your own kit before you trust a total. Going lighter also means carrying less margin, so treat insulation, navigation, water treatment and an emergency plan as fixed costs rather than places to save grams.
