Aquamira Drops vs SteriPen: Chemical or UV Treatment?
Chlorine dioxide drops weigh a couple of ounces, need no power and handle viruses as well as protozoa and bacteria, but they need waiting time and a long wait for cryptosporidium. A SteriPen treats a litre in about 90 seconds but depends on batteries, clear water and an electronic device that can fail. Neither removes silt, chemicals or heavy metals.

Choose the Aquamira water treatment drops, 1 oz if…
Carry the drops as your primary treatment on long trips, or as the backup to a filter. Two small bottles weigh almost nothing, need no power and address viruses, which no hollow fibre filter does. The cost is patience: mix the parts, wait the stated time, and extend it in cold water. For cryptosporidium the required contact time is long, measured in hours rather than minutes, so plan the wait rather than shortening it.

Choose the SteriPen Ultra UV water purifier, rechargeable if…
Carry the SteriPen if you want treated water immediately and your sources are clear. Ninety seconds per litre changes how a day is planned, because you can drink at every stream rather than treating in advance. Against that, it is an electronic device with a battery in cold weather, and it does nothing at all if it fails. Carry drops as a backup, because a dead purifier on a dry stretch is a serious situation.

Frequently asked questions
How long do the drops really need?
Follow the instructions on the bottle rather than a rule of thumb, and lengthen the time in cold water, because chemical treatment slows sharply as temperature falls. The published wait for bacteria and viruses is short. The wait for cryptosporidium is much longer, in the region of four hours, which is why chemical treatment alone is a poor choice where crypto is likely and a filter is the better tool.
Does UV work in cloudy water?
Poorly, and this is its main limitation. Ultraviolet light has to reach the organism to damage it, and suspended particles shade them. Filter or settle cloudy water before treating it with UV, or accept that the treatment may be incomplete. Clear looking tannin stained water is usually fine. Visibly silty water is not.
Do either of these remove chemicals?
Neither does. Chemical treatment and UV both address living organisms and do nothing about agricultural runoff, mine drainage, road salt or algal toxins. Nor does any hollow fibre filter. The only real protection is choosing where you draw water and reading current land management notices for the area you are in.
Should you carry treatment as well as a filter?
On a long or remote trip, yes. Filters freeze, clog and get dropped in rivers, and drops are the cheapest, lightest redundancy available. Two ounces of chemical backup is one of the few pieces of duplicate gear that is genuinely worth carrying, because the consequence of having no way to treat water is not a comfort problem.
How we choose: we compare published manufacturer specifications, listed weights, and verified owner reviews across retailers. We do not test gear in person, and every weight quoted here is the manufacturer's figure unless we say otherwise, so weigh your own kit before you trust a total. Going lighter also means carrying less margin, so treat insulation, navigation, water treatment and an emergency plan as fixed costs rather than places to save grams.
